How to prevent site visitors from modifying my Google Calendar(s)

Updated over a month ago

A: No. The calendar widget on your Wix site is read-only. It only displays your events and does not allow visitors to make changes. Any updates or edits must be made directly from Google Calendar by someone who has edit access.

A: When you are logged into the Google account that owns the calendar or has editor access, Google automatically lets you make changes. This can create the impression that the widget itself is editable, but it is not. Google Calendar simply recognizes your login and gives you the normal edit options that are available to you as an editor.

To see what regular site visitors experience, open your site in an incognito or private window, or use another browser where you are not signed in to Google. You will see that the calendar is view-only.

A: You can review your sharing settings in Google Calendar to confirm that no one has edit access.

  1. Open Google Calendar and go to Settings → Settings for my calendars → [Your Calendar] → Access permissions for events.

  2. Make sure only “Make available to public – See only free/busy” or “Make available to public – See all event details” is selected. These options allow people to view but not edit.

  3. Under “Share with specific people,” check the permission levels for each person:

    • See only free/busy: can only view

    • See all event details: can only view

    • Make changes to events: can edit

    • Make changes and manage sharing: has full admin control
Only users with the last two permissions can make changes to your calendar.
